Kenya Mission Trip Cancellation

We are sad to announce the cancellation of our previously scheduled October mission trip to Kenya. Although we feel this is the right decision, it was not an easy one to make. The October mission team was scheduled to host three different medical clinics in Kenya starting on the 15th of this month. However, the re-scheduling of the Kenyan general elections due to claims of fraud interfered with the trip’s logistics, causing us to cancel the trip for security concerns.

You may remember us writing about Kenya’s general elections a few months ago, in which we asked our supporters to come together and pray. The original Kenyan general elections were held back on August 8th and the incumbent President, Uhuru Kenyatta was declared the winner of the presidential election on August 11th. However, the vote was overturned by the Supreme Court of Kenya later that month amidst allegations of fraud by Kenyatta’s opposition Raila Odinga. Chief justice David Maraga announced the ruling stating, “The presidential election held on August 8 was not conducted in accordance with the constitution and applicable law, rendering the results invalid, null and void.” Kenya’s re-elections are currently scheduled to take place this coming Thursday, on October 26th.

Since the nullification of the former election there has been much campaigning and many demonstrations across the country. There have also been pockets of violence that have emerged. Last week, Kenyatta’s main opponent, Raila Odinga, withdrew his bid from the race citing a lack of electoral reform. On Wednesday, a senior member of Kenya’s electoral commission resigned and has fled the country amidst death threats and intimidation. She has stated the polls lack credibility.

We encourage you to join us in prayer for the nation of Kenya at this time.

PRAYER POINTS

  • Pray that Kenya’s election process would be fair and just.
  • Ask God for safety and protection for all who are running in the elections, presiding over the polls, and all who will show up to vote again.
  • Pray against violence and ask God to keep the nation safe and unified.
  • May Godly leaders be elected and the heart of the nation turn to the Lord in the midst of this season.
